Flash Site

Our final assignment for my graphic interface design class was to use Flash to create a website. I decided to do mine on Coheed and Cambria.

Catching Up!

I feel like I've been totally and completely buried lately (mostly because I have). One of the things I've let slid while feeling bogged down is this blog. Here are some assignments that have come and gone:

This one was our "Boo at the Zoo," assignment for Branding. We were to create marks based on a positioning statement for the boo at the zoo event.

This assignment was to create an abstract mark for a conglomerate company that funds smaller companies and is based in technology-or something like that. Obviously, I haven't looked back on this since finishing ;-)

There's a couple. I'll leave it at that for now and someday (probably at the end of the semester–which is soon approaching) soon I'll take photos of and post my printmaking assignments for the semester.

Finished Flash Project

Here is a link to my first ever attempt at working with Flash. All in all, I really like Flash and this project was great until I had a problem with my original file and had to pull an all-nighter the night before it was due in order to finish. With that being said, I feel like this "finished," clip is still pretty unfinished. But alas, it's done and been handed in.

Typo Poster

Typographic poster, that is.

Our next assignment in Interface is to design a poster using only typography from an audio clip of our choosing and later we will animate the quote using Flash. Naturally, I went with a really solidly epic quote. It hails from Army of Darkness.

Today we have digital comps due for critique. Here are a couple of my favorite. I'm really liking this assignment so far. I love my quote (obviously) and working with the type, but it has been a challenge since my quote is so long.

Hi, my name is Jeremy and...

...I have completed my HTML site for Graphic Interface I and amazingly enough have lived to tell about it. Dramatic? Maybe. But this project sucked the life right out of me. I slept less in four nights that I usually sleep in one night. I barely saw my family. I had my mind blown to bits again and again and again. And after all that, I have conquered. Is my site perfect? No. But it I am pretty freaking proud of it since it was my first ever effort at using HTML and CSS coding. Now that I am done, I know there is much I could have done differently and so many things I should have done or maybe not done at all, but nonetheless, I am proud to say I finished, *patting myself on my back* and I am proud of all those who camped out with me in the UR Lab day after day and night after night: Good Job.

I present to you: Design Thinking for Innovation – the website!

*A side note: I built the site according to Safari and Firefox browser standards. It may look funky in other browsers like Internet Explorer or on a PC computer, but hopefully not!

Yeah, I know...

...every year students make a website for Graphic Interface I about their trip to Switzerland, but I did it anyway, so there.

Here's the home page. It (as well as the rest) is a work-in-progress.

More to come later.

Figure/Groud Mark

A recent branding assignment was to create a mark with our first and last initials based on a figure/ground relationship. I'll admit it, I struggled, but I came a long way from draft to completion.
Rough draft:
drawn and scanned

I call her Nellie.

This is from the first assignment in my Brand Identity class. We had to create a "mark of identity," from a zoo animal. Part of the assignment was to focus on using the "Pen," tool in Illustrator, creating the mark so it would be closed gestalt, as well as using as little detail as possible and still having the mark identifiable. I really liked the assignment.

Here is an early version:

Always interesting to see where the process will take you. That's what I LOVE about design!

Some Work

Luggage tags

A woodcut print for my beginning printmaking class.

Site Critique

For this here assignment, we were asked to search the world wide web for "magnificent," sites and choose two we liked the best. One of these two is required to be built using HTML and the other using Flash. After searching website after website, some that I've never seen and many that I used frequently, I came up with my two.

Graphic Interface IN Your Face

Before I left on my journey to Switzerland, I posted about how I would be transitioning this blog from strictly photography to including design-oriented posts as well. Having recently finished my (365) Days of Photography and started school again, I figure now is as good of a time as any.

For my graphic interface class, one of the requirements is that we post images and talk about our work and the process of creating it. Also, some random assignments will be seen on here. Should be interesting. Let me know your thoughts. I'm stoked. And you should be too, cause here comes Graphic Interface IN Your Face!

FIN:

Monday, August 16
Because some days are just more fun than others.

Well folks, this photograph is officially the last of my (365) Days of Photography journey. It's hard to sum up all that I've learned in the last year. If I had to though, in one sentence, I would say that I have learned that there is a photograph in everything. You don't need to go somewhere exotic or miraculously different than where you live (though, that helps at times), because the shots are all around us all the time; we just have to look for them. Yes, it's true that in our everyday lives some things are more exciting than others, but the photographs are still there. All in all, I'm mostly proud of what I accomplished. It wasn't easy taking a photo a day, especially when school, work, family, church and all of life's other aspects crowd what little free time you have available. I won't lie, there were days that I missed a photo, but I always made sure to make up the photo for that day or photograph what I had originally planned for that day, but maybe was unable to for whatever reason.

I feel a certain relief to not have to constantly be thinking and looking for my "shot of the day," but I also feel a kind of sadness that the challenge has come to it's official end. Thankfully, I think this has taught me to see a shot in everything I do. My eyes see things as if they are looking through a viewfinder now. I love it. Thank you to all who have followed along with me on this journey, both vocally with your comments and talking to me face to face and also silently viewing the images each week. Please keep stopping by the blog. I hope to continuously update it with photos and design work.

Jeremy

WEEK FIFTY TWO:

Monday, August 9

This little bug loves to hide under the covers. It's a bed bug that I don't mind if it gets me though.

Tuesday, August 10
I've become quite used to drawings all over the front and backyard of our home. The other day as I was watching the youngster run wild, I was examining all the chalk drawings on the ground and they made me laugh because they reminded me of some sort of cave art.

Wednesday, August 11
Lines, patterns and shadows.

Thursday, August 12
The Cache County Fair.
A beautiful day at the fair.

Friday, August 13
Years ago, my friends and I worked a sales job over a summer in NV. We all picked up the same refill mug while we were out. Sadly, mine broke recently. No big deal? Wrong. First off, it was sentimental, and next, it was, well, a refill mug.

Saturday, August 14
Tyler came up for a Logan visit this last weekend and just tuckered himself out. I guess this is the byproduct of a few hours sleep and an 11-mile run. Sorry for snapping the pic Ty, but I couldn't resist.
"Uncle," Tyler is also Cambria's favorite new person. We think she may have her first crush. All we heard all weekend out of her mouth was, "Tyyywer?"

Sunday, August 15
The last day.
About a half hour after I snapped this shot, there was an onslaught of hummingbirds swarming this feeder. I think we counted somewhere around seven or eight. It was amazing. I've never seen anything like it. But alas, this shot is what I wanted to stick with. I love the way the sunlight shines through the thin wing of the hummingbird and makes it almost translucent.

WEEK FIFTY ONE:

Monday, August 2
Hallie's latest. A blanket for baby girl number two.

Tuesday, August 3
My beautiful Freitag card holder. Made from old European bus tarps. Cost effective to make and ever-so-stylish and sturdy.
God bless the Swiss innovation.

Wednesday, August 4
Just another day at the pool.

Thursday, August 5
Guess this door doesn't get much usage, except from the vines that is.

Friday, August 6
Lately in the mornings Cambria has dibs-ed our bed for her personal "reading," time.

Saturday, August 7
Yeah, Cambria wishes this was her breakfast.

Sunday, August 8
Our small little "garden." Tomatoes, peppers and strawberries. It's doing pretty well, when a little someone isn't picking things before they're ready.

Monday, August 2, 2010

WEEK FIFTY:

Monday, July 26
Our pepper plant.
To be honest, the shot didn't work out, so I improvised with some different color and saturation effects. But I still don't like the shot. Ah well, you win some, you lose some.

Tuesday, July 27
I LOVE the lines and design of this building on the USU campus!

Wednesday, July 28
Two portraits. One shot.

Thursday, July 29
This (plus a printer and iPod touch) is what totaling a scooter will get you with the insurance check. Well, plus the cash from selling your old laptop.

Friday, July 30
Our friend Jessica and Hallie and their pregnant tummies. Obviously Hallie is a tad bit farther along :)

Saturday, July 31
Jake and Eli's reception. It was awesome. Great photos, beautiful set up, good music, epic DJ and unbelievable dancing.

Sunday, August 1
She has a slight obsession with corn on the cob. Just kinda.

Sunday, July 25, 2010

WEEK FORTY NINE:

Monday, July 19
This is what having a 21-month-old looks like:

Tuesday, July 20
An exceptional day for clouds and blue, blue sky.

Wednesday, July 21
The senior citizen parking at Golden Corral. All the signs for the senior parking have been hit and pushed over. Pretty sweet.

Thursday, July 22
It's not everyday you see a massive dragonfly dead on the side of the road.

Friday, July 23
Good friends Alissa and Tanner's wedding reception. Instead of a sign in book, they had a typewriter. How awesome is that!?!

Saturday, July 24
Our friend Elise's birthday was on Saturday and we celebrated with a huge breakfast/get together. It was awesome. It was crazy to see how many kiddos there are running around these days. This shot was long overdue, but we finally got it. I love it. It has such a classic "line all the kids up," feel to it. Too bad we were missing some of the other kids and parents that are living elsewhere at the moment.

Sunday, July 25
Anyone else find the text on this sign funny, given what kind of business it is?

Monday, July 19, 2010

WEEK FORTY EIGHT:

Monday, July 12
Hallie was peeling this cucumber and set it down to do get Cambria's dinner for her and the next time we looked up, she was eating the whole thing. Crazy kiddo.

Tuesday, July 13
I've been really into The Avett Brothers as of late and highly recommend them to anyone who enjoys quality music.
Thanks again Jer.

Wednesday, July 14
The beautiful ladies in my life.

Thursday, July 15
Ah, summertime. Gotta love the non-air conditioned apartment.

Friday, July 16
Someone learned the "Superman," style of swinging this week. And she hasn't wanted to do anything but since.

Saturday, July 17
I missed taking pictures of this darling while I was away. I think it's obvious by how many times this week she made my photograph of the day.

Sunday, July 18
A Sunday BBQ at Pam and Guy's and a little swimming for the little lady=a great day.
